Paintball guns which are only used to fire paint pellets while at properly run and insured venues will not require a certificate. Paintball guns owned or used for other purposes may require a certificate – you should contact the police for advice. 

Airsoft Gun

Realistic imitation airsoft guns with a muzzle energy below 2.5 joules (or 1.3 for fully automatic guns) are not covered by the new legislation. Their use is already controlled by the Violent Crime Reduction Act 2006. Airsoft guns above these muzzle energies may require a certificate.

. What does it fire?

Water/Foam/Toy projectiles

Only weapons which can inflict a lethal injury are covered by the new legislation. This means that toys like water pistols, foam dart guns and so on will not require a certificate. If in doubt you should contact the police or a firearms dealer for advice.

You may be able to find out the muzzle energy from the manufacturer’s website, or from a firearms dealer.  Most airguns  that fire metal pellets are above 1 joule and will require a certificate.

You won’t require a certificate if you are only storing or transporting air weapons for one of these businesses. Auctioneers will require a permit to sell an air weapon.

You won’t require a certificate to use and possess air weapons provided that you are supervised at all times by a certificate holder.
